In homes or businesses where central heating and air conditioning systems aren’t feasible, a ductless HVAC unit is the perfect solution. There’s no need to install ductwork when it’s much simpler to install a ductless mini-split system in practically any home or commercial building. In many cases, it can also be less expensive than installing a conventional HVAC system.

But how do ductless HVAC systems even work? Climate Systems Heating and Cooling shares their insight below.
Understanding How a Ductless HVAC System Works
Also known as a ductless mini-split system, a ductless HVAC system is designed and built just like a central air conditioning system, which means it has an outdoor compressor/condenser unit and an indoor air-handling unit. It also has a conduit that houses the power cable, refrigerant tubing, suction tubing and a condensate drain that links the indoor and outdoor units. However, a ductless system is smaller than a central system, and each unit can only provide heating and cooling to a single room.
The Biggest Advantages
A ductless HVAC system is named so due the fact that it doesn’t require air ducts to distribute conditioned air, making it ideal for homes and businesses where ductwork installation isn’t feasible. For instance, many older homes and buildings don’t have pre-existing ductwork, and trying to add a central HVAC system can not only be expensive, it can also put the inner structure at risk. This isn’t a problem with ductless systems, as they can deliver just as much heating and cooling output at a much lower cost.
Having a ductless HVAC system installed doesn’t mean your home’s indoor air quality will decline. A typical unit has a built-in multi-layer filtration system that eliminates any airborne pollutants circulating in your home. The conditioned air doesn’t pass through any ductwork, so the quality won’t degrade because it comes straight from the unit. Even if you already have a central HVAC system, you can still have a ductless mini-split system installed to supplement it. This can be used when you only need to cool one area of your home.
