That’s why it pays to take good care of your HVAC system, so you can avoid having to make an emergency call to your technician on a searing-hot day or in the middle of a subzero night. It’s also crucial that your HVAC system has warranty coverage so you won’t have to worry about paying too much for repairs, at least while your unit is still under warranty.
However, it’s quite easy to void an HVAC warranty, leaving you with no other alternative but to pay out-of-pocket for an expensive repair. Here are the mistakes you should avoid making that can void your warranty:
Failing to register the warranty. Some manufacturers automatically activate your warranty when you have their product installed by a licensed professional, but there are also those that require warranty registration upon installation. If you neglect this step, you could lose coverage or reduce the warranty’s length.
Improper installation. This is a common problem with DIY installations or HVAC systems that are installed by an inexperienced technician. If the system encounters an issue and the manufacturer is able to identify the problem as stemming from improper installation, they can deny coverage.
Failing to maintain the HVAC system. Most HVAC manufacturers require annual professional maintenance to keep their products running without a hitch. Whether you forgot to have your unit checked or are trying to save money by not having it maintained, skipping annual professional maintenance can void your warranty.
Not keeping proof of maintenance. Even if you have your HVAC system maintained by a licensed professional every year, if you throw away the receipts and other proof of maintenance, you can’t make a warranty claim in the event your HVAC unit runs into a problem. Make sure to keep your receipts in a place where you can find them easily and they’re safe from water damage.
Using third-party replacement parts. Your HVAC system will work optimally if all of its parts are from the same manufacturer. If you try to save money by allowing a technician to install a non-manufacturer part, your warranty will become invalid.
