Furnace filter. Determine if your filter is clean or dirty. If there’s too much dirt in your filtering system, this could obstruct airflow. Thus, you’ll notice reduced airflow coming from the registers.
Pilot ignition light. If your furnace is able to turn on or initiate a start cycle but doesn’t seem to fire up, the problem could be a faulty or dirty igniter or sensor. Refer to your user manual to locate the igniter. Typically, it can be found near the spot where the flames shoot out of the burners. But before removing the front panel and checking the igniter, make sure to turn off the gas and the power to the furnace.
Overall, it’s best to call in a technician to do the inspection so that the task can be done safely. The sensor likely needs to be cleaned anyway. But if cleaning the igniter doesn’t do the trick, the technician will have to check other components to find the cause of the problem.
Gas supply. Ensure the gas control valve to the furnace is open. If it’s not open, your furnace won’t be able to receive fuel. However, if you smell gas, call an HVAC contractor immediately.
