HVAC equipment has filters that help minimize airborne contaminants in your home. They also help improve indoor air quality and prolong the life of your air conditioner. While your HVAC system can run without a filter, experts don’t recommend it.
Continue reading to find out what happens if you run your HVAC equipment without a filter.
Poor indoor air quality. Without a filter, your indoor air quality will suffer. Any dirt, dust or other pollutants in the air will just continue circulating. The debris will get sucked back up through the intake, pumped back via the air vents and then stay in the air until it settles and clogs the equipment.
Problems with the Freon tube. An air conditioner sucks air from the house and blows it across Freon-filled copper tubing. These tubes are always wet, and when unfiltered air passes through them, debris sticks to the condensate and coats the fins. Once this happens, your equipment may begin to perform poorly.
Ductwork troubles. Debris that doesn’t stick to the Freon tubes will reach the ductwork. It will start building up inside the ductwork and get trapped in the ribbed aluminum tubes. As a result, moisture will accumulate inside the ductwork, which can lead to mold growth. Mold is one of the last things you want in your house because it can cause health issues and even trigger allergies or asthma attacks.
Condensate drain issues. The condensate drain removes condensation and moisture from your HVAC system. It wouldn’t be able to function without the aid of a filter. If you run your equipment without one, you’ll be putting it at risk of water damage.
